The Tony Ireland Stadium is an international standard AFL and cricket stadium in Thuringowa Central, Townsville, Australia. The stadium is a part of the Riverway sporting and cultural complex. The stadium includes the oval, a 1013-seat grandstand and supporting facilities, a practice oval and cricket practice nets. The design was modelled on Brisbane's Gabba cricket ground specifications and has a 6 turf wicket block. Tony Ireland Stadium has a maximum capacity of 10,000+ This was achieved on New Year's Eve 2007 when 10,024 people attended a Twenty20 cricket match featuring Queensland versus Victoria.
The stadium is also home to the Thuringowa Bulldogs AFL club, and the AFL's local regional office. In June 2009 the stadium hosted a 4 day first class match between Pakistan A and the Australia A cricket team. Stadium has also hosted some matches of the 2012 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup which was held in Australia from 11 August 2012. India emerged as the winner of Under-19 Cricket World cup after beating Australia in the final at the Tony Ireland Stadium.
Tony Ireland Stadium comprises an Australian Football League (AFL) and cricket oval, a 1,000-seat grandstand and supporting facilities, the Riverway Oval, and cricket practice nets. Tony Ireland Stadium has been home to AFL and cricket matches at local, regional, state, and national levels.
The stadium features a two storey grandstand, featuring a cantilevered roof curving in both cross and long sections, which rises from just above the spectator berms. The lower level incorporates change rooms, storage for gardening equipment, externally accessible amenities, an AFL Townsville development office, a shared meeting room, and facilities for medical and drug testing. The upper level features a shared AFL, cricket and corporate lounge with club administration, amenities, kitchen, store, and management and meeting rooms, and is the home of the Thuringowa Bulldogs and Queensland AFL. There is also wheelchair access to the main entrance at the southern end of the stand with entry to the field and all the lower level facilities. The Riverway Oval underwent a $250,000 lighting upgrade in July 2010, allowing opportunities for more sport and community events to be staged at the oval.
Tony Ireland Stadium has a Function Room located on Level 1.
The function room is equipped with an operational bar, audio and visual equipment and views across the Riverway Lagoons, Parkways and Oval. The room is available for various functions and events including conferences, training seminars, weddings, birthdays, trade shows and more.
Townsville City Council has an approved panel of caters that can be used across all Sports Facilities run by the council.
